I like the cut of your jib – not many people these days take the time to ground their politics in theory. I think it’s a real nice idea to take the time to contextualise the conservative position and I applaud your efforts.

Lots of so-called conservatives put forward what are actually classical liberal arguments without specifying what they value that is particularly conservative; while these arguments are of course sound and valid, it is refreshing to see such attention to the background and detail that you rightly point out is necessary to fully grasp conservatism. (The link to the Kirk Centre is also very handy.)

I wish Burke had divided his book into chapters and expressed himself as clearly as you do.

Yeah, Mississippi has a wind pool also, for all the properties south of Interstate 10. Fortunately, I live north of I-10, so I don't have to worry with a wind pool or flood insurance.

I found out this morning from some co-workers that your "deductible" on the wind pool is around 3-5% of your home's appraisal value. Ouch!

Thanks for the,erm,enlightening comment. I'll try to write where it's not so "aggrivating". Do you mind if I give you a tip? Lay off the very strong coffee with a lot of sugar - it tends to cloud the mind. :)

I don't like the way you write. At all. It was quite aggrivating to read the entire time. Then again I can't blame you because I write basicaly the same way I talk also, AND it was quite informative. A little. Sorry. I've had like three cups of very strong coffee with a lot of sugar.

Most carriers that specialize in flood don't even work with wind coverage, and vice versa. Fl has a Wind Pool and I think a Flood pool, but not sure on the flood. Everyone pays a "fee" that supports the pool on their commerical or personal policies.

I expected this to happen and I really don't consider it price gouging. In fact, I think the fact you went to places without gas let's you know that anything in that price range was not price gouging.
For this particular moment in time based on the price of oil and the capacity to refine gasoline, I would figure prices above $5.25 or $5.50 to be bordering the price gouging line.
In Alabama we have an anti-price gouging law. This essentially scares businesses into not charging what they could. Of course, Alabama and Georgia (The other state with this law) also had the highest number of stations without gas.

I saw his comment not as an attack on Palin, but more as an attack of McCain policy. I just figured he was comparing McCain to Bush which of course the McCain campaign hates.
McCain's campaign did incredible damage control by asserting this was a slight on Governor Palin. Of course, the second they did that is the same moment when EVERYONE started talking about lipstick on pigs. Both politicians have used the idiom several times in their respective campaigns, just the McCain camp was able to thow it back on the Obama camp.

I use WordPress' comment engine, and I have it set to moderate the first comment from someone. It works beautifully for me. The only comments that I actually delete are the ones that are clearly spam, but somehow Akismet missed them, or that are just vulgar screeds, or have nothing to do with the post. I haven't had any backlash, but of course my traffic is not that great... :-(

That's a good idea...I may have to try that out if (actually when) I receive a comment so bad that I have to delete it - with this political season I'm sure to get a few!

I've had one since almost the beginning and when I delete a comment and get a nasty email, I just link the policy in the reply email. Its necessary to protect yourself. And the main reason is your #1 above - people have no manners.

Bottom line for me is, "Your site, your rules." I filter all comments so it's my rules without a policy. Heck, I let my friends post negative comments cause I know where they come from. The guy with digital courage of posting nonsense is less likely to return when I filter. I care little for him to return anyways.
